Test Tube Baby

Are test tube babies any different than normal babies?

Test tube babies sure sound out of the ordinary, but it is just another term when children are born through the process of in-vitro fertilization, which is a process of fertilizing a woman's egg outside her body and then placing the embryo again into her uterus for complete development. It has derived its name from the fact that the embryo develops in the test tube followed by the incubator rather than in the woman's body, and obviously, a term used for referring to the IVF process.

The procedure of test tube babies:

The test tube method is a boon to many couples with infertility problems that are not responsive to other modes of treatment. It involves the following steps:

  • The process is done in a laboratory. But, first, the eggs are derived from the female and are fertilized by sperm derived from the male.
  • Then, it is cultured for about 3 to 6 days, during which it divides 2 to 4 times while remaining in the incubator in the laboratory.
  • After this process, the embryos are transferred into the mother's uterus and on the 14th day, a beta HCG test will be taken.
  • This is how eggs are fertilized outside the mother's body.

Now, let us look at some of the criteria which determine a couple's indications to undergo the IVF process.

Female factor:

  • Women who are of any age trying to get pregnant and are unable to do so can resolve their issues, if any, by undergoing IVF treatment.
  • Unknown infertility
  • Hydrosalpinx, tubal blockage, and infection.
  • Those who are unable to get pregnant even after 5 to 6 cycles of IUI or other modes of fertility treatments.
  • If due to endometriosis, there is difficulty in conceiving.
  • Elderly age of the lady.

In some cases, such as the advanced age of the female, premature ovarian failure, and diminished ovarian reserve, you can still get pregnant with the help of an egg donor.

Male factor:

Sometimes, male factors also might play an important role in infertility issues such as oligospermia, azoospermia, etc. Couples with such problems can also undergo IVF treatment.

IVF treatment remains the favorite option among couples to increase their chances of pregnancy since the success rate is high.

1. What is the cost of IVF treatment??

Well, the cost of treatment primarily depends on your location and the medical history of both mother and the father. However, the cost might range from Rs.1 to 2 lakhs, and this purely depends on the age factor and the cause of infertility.

2. Why are multiple eggs collected for IVF???

It depends on each individual and in general, an optimum number of eggs is required. Controlled ovarian stimulation for 12 days produces multiple eggs. So available eggs should be retrieved and fertilized by sperm.

More embryos can be preserved and only 2 or 3 embryos are transferred.

3. How many attempts of IVF can be taken??

It is best if you can conceive on the first try, but if not, there is nothing wrong with repeating the process till you conceive, provided you are mentally and physically strong enough.

4. How long can the IVF cycle take?

From the initial consultation to the transfer, the duration of the IVF cycle ranges from 6 to 8 weeks. This depends upon each individual and their health condition. Sometimes, the process can be split further and might take longer.

5. What is the percentage of success of IVF on the first try?

The success of IVF depends upon age factors and fertility issues. It has been estimated that the success rate of IVF on the first try is around 25-30%. However, most patients' success rate rises on multiple IVF cycles.

6. Are there any chances for multiple births in IVF??

Yes, there are chances for multiple births in IVF treatment since multiple eggs are fertilized and multiple embryos are transferred into the uterus of the female.
